Myth and Legend

This article is about “The Difference Between Myth and Legend”. We are going to discuss some notable aspects of The Myths and Legends. Keep visiting Ilmu علموبابا

Do you know the difference between myth and Legend? For most people, the answer is “NO”. Even among those who have studied the myths and legends of our ancestors, very few can explain what makes a myth and why it should be considered real or not. There are also those who classify myths and legends as “myths” because of their own confusion and lack of understanding. However, in order to understand this difference between the two, we have to first understand what a myth is. So, What exactly is it?

Myth and Legend
Myth and Legend

Simply put, a myth is an account of a story that doesn’t have any evidence to back it up. It’s simply a tale that was told by someone and considered true by most people. This doesn’t mean that every single myth is a fairy tale; just take note that most of them were probably told by only one or two people, most likely narrating their story to friends or relatives in the name of tradition or religion. Examples include stories about ice statues, monsters, the Loch Ness monster, and other sea creatures. They have no solid evidence to back them up, and thus they are classified as “myths”.

On the other hand, a legend is something known to be true. A myth is something that may have happened but cannot be proven. Some examples of such facts are the existence of unicorns, the stories of fairies, and the historical accounts of historical figures like Alexander the Great. On the other hand, a legend is something believed to have happened but nothing has been found to support it. Examples of these include accounts of flying objects, monsters, the Loch Ness monster, and many others.

The reason why there is such a big difference between myth and folklore is because of its nature. A myth is purely imaginary, while a legend is based on factual data. Both are independent entities with different attributes that may not always agree with each other. A myth is a collection of ideas, stories, and tales that have grown in the imagination of the creator. A legend, on the other hand, is a story or narrative that describes events or places that actually occurred.

Another difference between the two lies in their source. While myths generally come from the imagination of the creator, legends are usually created through a controlled process. Stories told in legends generally have an element of truth to them. As a result, the legends have a degree of validity. On the other hand, the only person who can really prove the existence of something is its creator.

There are still other differences between the two, most commonly in terms of the details included in the creation of a myth and a legend. For instance, some myths might have several elements that are necessary for the construction of a story. Other than that, a myth is often very short. In fact, the most famous legends may only tell of a single incident. On the other hand, a myth usually includes information that is more general in nature, such as the beliefs of a people about a particular incident or occurrence.

Another example of the difference between the two can be found in how they are presented to the public. Stories and legends that are told to the public in a straightforward and unassuming manner tend to be more mythological in nature. Examples of this are the stories of U.S. soldiers in World War II. They were shown engaging in activities that were directed against their own comrades and often did not include elements of fantasy like flying airplanes. Conversely, legends are usually very detailed, using a great deal of creativity to make the story as authentic as possible.

In conclusion, the difference between myth and folklore is very subtle and depends upon the perspective of the creator. It can also depend on the way in which the story is told. The point, however, is that both types of creative literature can provide great insight into ancient topics and can provide much entertainment. When it comes to books, however, the former tends to win out in most cases.
