Nayi Nasal Ka Noha – Introduction, Text & English Translation | Amjad Islam Amjad Poetry
“Nayi Nasal Ka Noha” is a thought-provoking and realistic poem by renowned Urdu poet Amjad Islam Amjad. In this poem, the poet highlights the mental confusion, intellectual crisis, and social contradictions faced by the modern youth. It reflects the voice of a young individual who feels lost between learned beliefs, traditional values, and the harsh realities of life. Amjad Islam Amjad is known for his simple yet profound poetic style. In this poem, he skillfully portrays how the values and principles taught to the younger generation often fail to align with real-life situations. As a result, young people find themselves struggling to understand their purpose and identity. The poem uses powerful symbols such as “market,” “currency,” and “coins” to represent the changing nature of societal values. It suggests that the world has evolved, but the teachings given to the youth have not adapted accordingly. This mismatch creates feelings of frustration, isolation, and disappointment among the new generation. This poem is not only significant from a literary perspective but also highly relevant in today’s world, as it addresses the real challenges faced by young individuals and encourages deeper reflection on education, values, and societal change.

Nayi Nasal Ka Noha | Amjad Islam Amjad
Main sochta hoon
Likha hai jo kuch, parhha hai jo kuch woh kis liye tha,
Kahan se poochon!
Woh kis liye hai kise bataoon!
Mujhe aqeedon ke khwab de kar kaha gaya, in mein roshni hai
Chamakti qadron ki chhabb dikha kar mujhe bataya yeh zindagi hai
Sikhaye mujh ko kamal aise
Yaqeen na laayen sikhane wale agar unhein ko main ja sunaoon
Main kehna aankhon ki dastaras mein naye manazir kahan se laaon
Kahan pe jins-e-kamal rakhun, khayal-e-taza kahan sajaoon
Zameen paon talay nahin hai, to kaise sitaron ki simt jaaon
Purani qadrein jo mohtaram hain
Unhein sambhaloon ya aanay walay naye aqeedon ka bhed paaoon
Woh sab aqeeday, tamaam qadrein, khayal saaray
Jo mujh ko sikke bana ke bakhshe gaye thay mere hawas-e-khamsa se mo’tabar thay
Jab un ko rehbar bana ke nikla
To main ne dekha ke mere haathon mein kuch nahin hai
Main aisay bazaar mein khara hoon jahan currency badal chuki hai
Lament of the New Generation (English Translation)
I keep wondering—
all that I have written, all that I have read—what was it for?
Whom should I ask?
For what purpose was it, and to whom should I explain it?
I was given dreams of beliefs and told, “There is light in them.”
Shown the glitter of shining values, I was told, “This is life.”
I was taught such ideals
that even the teachers themselves would not believe
if I were to repeat them back to them.
How can I bring new visions
within the reach of these worn-out eyes?
Where should I place this excellence I carry?
Where should I adorn these fresh thoughts?
When there is no ground beneath my feet,
how can I move toward the stars?
These old values, though respectable—
should I preserve them,
or try to understand the secrets of the new beliefs yet to come?
All those beliefs, all those values, all those thoughts
that were given to me like coins,
trusted and verified by my senses—
when I set out, taking them as my guide,
I discovered that my hands held nothing.
I stand in a marketplace
where the currency has already changed.
